Spay, Neuter, Save

Spay/Neuter Program

Presently RCARS is focusing its funds and energy towards reducing the feral Cat/Dog population in Real County with an emphasis on the cat population.

Our process is to identify feral populations, trap the animals once located and have them spayed/neutered, rabies vaccine applied and release back into their natural environment.

A future program, once we have sufficient funds, is to create a "Voucher Program' in order to assist Real County residents in need with spaying and neutering their pets. Once initiated a voucher application will be submitted to RCARS for consideration. Once approved the owner will be responsible for transporting the pet to and from the veterinary clinic. RCARS may be able to assist with transportation in some cases.

Unsure if you want to spay or neuter your pet? Learn about the benefits below.

Thank you so much for doing your part in decreasing animal suffering and euthanasia by preventing unwanted litters. Being a responsible pet owner is saving lives!

What if I don’t qualify for a low-cost spay/neuter voucher?

RCARS understands there is a great need for low-cost services throughout Real County. We’ve developed a list of additional low-cost spay/neuter resources outside of Real County that might be available to you. We encourage you to seek these out and possibly look for other friends, family, or neighbors who are also in need of services who can share the drive or the cost of the drive with you.

Other possibilities include:

  • Start your own “Spay Fund” and save a little money each month until you can afford the surgery.
  • Check with your veterinary clinic to see if they offer a payment plan.
  • If you can only afford to have one pet done at a time, spay the females first to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

What are the benefits to spaying/neutering my animal?

  • Reduces the risk of cancer. Spaying a female cat or dog before her first heat protects her from the risks of uterine, ovarian, and mammary cancers. Neutering a male cat or dog reduces his risk of numerous health problems, including testicular cancer.
  • Minimizes negative behaviors. Unaltered cats and dogs can develop negative behaviors when they reach sexual maturity. These include aggression, irritability, vocalization, the desire to roam, the desire to fight with other animals, and inappropriate elimination.
  • Improves overall health. Spayed and neutered animals have longer lives, and fewer health complications than those who are not. They typically make calmer house pets, have fewer negative behaviors, require fewer trips to the veterinarian, and are generally more affordable to own over their lifetime.

Pet overpopulation is a reality. It’s every pet owners responsibility to help decrease the number of unwanted animals in their area by spaying and neutering their pets. You can make a difference!
